Olympic Silver Medalist, Hidilyn Diaz, cries for help as she showed the hard times she is currently facing regarding the fast approaching Tokyo 2020 olympics. Hidilyn is in dire need of financial help as seen in her Instagram post. “Is it okay to ask for sponsorship from private companies towards tokyo 2020? Hirap na hirap na ako”. This post clearly states that Hidilyn is not given the proper attention and support she deserves. A Filipino-Athlete who gives her blood, sweat, and tears to the sport she loves and to give honor to our country is not even given sufficient help by the country she’s representing. She is not the only victim of this issue, but also hundreds and thousands of aspiring Filipino-Athletes whose efforts are going unnoticed due to the poor support system in sports in this country.
This blog post is specifically made as a voice for those athletes in our country who are lacking the support and attention. This serves as a wake up call to our sports sector/department that our country has a lot of potential, re: sports, but these athletes will not reach their full potential if support and attention is not given to them.
Hidilyn Diaz quickly became a prominent figure in Philippine Sports when she won silver in the Rio Olympics 3 years ago. She also won several medals after that event in various events like the Asian Games. I believe that this alone serves as enough reason to enable the PSC, Philippines Sports Commission, to give their 110% support for Hidilyn. Her recent actions speak otherwise. Based on ABS-CBN sports news, they showed the IG posts of Hidilyn regarding the issue on financial support. Rappler and ESPN news have other updates though, as they revealed that PSC has already addressed this issue and actually set a meeting with Hidilyn and pledged to give extra support and attention knowing that the Tokyo 2020 olympics is just around the corner.
This issue generates interest because for me, the Philippines is already facing tons of negativity on politics, our government, social issues and even on our economy itself. Sports can be one of the bright spots that can still give honor and pride to our country despite of the flaws we are all currently facing at present time. Knowing that one of our top athletes that has proven to give that honor and pride to our country is not given the right support and attention, it is truly a sad issue to face. This might even spark hopelessness to young and aspiring athletes who want to be like Hidilyn to reach their dreams. But knowing that the PSC is took measures to try solve this problem gives a sign of hope for those young people and maybe start something positive for our country to be proud of.
